re-elected the president. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news, washington. president obama never used the words "democrat" or "republican" in his second inaugural address, but his political message was crystal clear. a full-throated embrace of progressive policies, along with a directive for our leaders to spear head the challenges that define us as individuals and as a country. >> the commitments we make to each other through medicare, medicaid and social security, these things do not sap our initiative. they strengthen us. they do not make us a nation of takers. they free us to take the risks that make this country great. we will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. we, the people, still believe

and may he forever bless these united states of america. >> well, this year the inauguration fell on the martin luther king jr. holiday. after being sworn in monday, president obama paused for a moment of reflection in front of the bust of the leader at the capitol rotunda. he was joined by the first lady and congressional leaders. but the president wasn't the only one in the spotlight monday. first daughters sasha and malia obama had quite a few scene-stealing moments of their own. malia busted out some dance moves for her mom before the swearing-in. and 11-year-old sasha created an instant viral video by yawning during her dad's presidential address right after a line about education policy. the girls also used their phones to take lots of photos of their family during the event. at one point, malia even photo bombed her younger sister. before leaving the inaugural platform as the center of attention for the very last time, president obama had the presence of mind to stop and take in the moment.

>> surprised he actually came up -- >> persistence pays off. dylan dreyer is here. good morning. >> good morning. we are actually seeing pretty cold temperatures across the country. want a lot going on across the west coast today, so we're dealing with poor air quality across the pacific northwest. where it's coldest, especially across oregon, that's where we're starting off today with freezing fog. we will see a bigger system start to move in tomorrow. it will bring rain to the seattle area, portland, oregon, down into northwestern california through the day tomorrow and into the rest of the week it looks like. it's another big storm that moves in and sticks around for a while. the next expected rainfall for the next 48 hours, you can see it takes a day before the rain moves in but it looks like we'll pick up an inch from seattle to northwestern california. and then it will eventually start to spread eastward in the form of mountain snow. we could end up with some

welcome back to "early today." elections are being held in israel today to determine if prime minister benjamin netanyahu will win a third term in office. nbc's jim maceda is in tel aviv. jim, good morning.

now, prime minister's netanyahu's coalition government may be weaker after today's voting. will that change israel's policies? >> reporter: good morning, mara. the latest polling showed even though netanyahu's party is about to lose eight to ten seats in the parliament, he'll still make it a comfortable win today. the policies going forward, that will be largely shaped by the coalition he forms to govern with and that horse trading will start in earnest probably as early as tomorrow. his obvious choice is lining up with even more hard-line parties to his right, including a right wing, extreme right wing group who are saying publicly they want to annex much of the west bank. that would be a worst-case scenario for palestinians here. or netanyahu could surprise

everyone and form a more centrist government, leaning more to the left of center, giving him, as analysts here say, more options to deal with stalled peace talks and a struggling economy. now, that is a very longshot, mara. what we're expected to see when the dust settles here, hopefully we'll get early returns by this evening, by minute night our time we should have a pretty good idea who wins and it's quite likely to be a more entrenched and transient netanyahu. >> thank you for that. now, back to our nation's capital, where the senate has the opportunity to kill the filibuster in 60-vote minimum to pass the legislation. instead, they can change the rules today in favor of a simple 51-vote majority while bringing back the talking filibuster. next to los angeles where former cardinal roger mahony said i'm sorry. according to confidential church records the retired catholic leader and other clergymen shielded pedophile priests for

from criminal prosecution for more than a decade before the scandal became public. authorities say one person has died after a snowy highway pileup involving as many as 85 vehicles in southwest ohio. the crash on interstate 275 was one of three separate pileups that snared dozens of vehicles on monday. in denver a security camera showed a mini van slamming into a parked suv, which then crashed into two other parked vehicles. the 22-year-old driver told police he fell asleep at the wheel. two people inside the van were hurt. a dramatic rescue caught on tape. in spain a 52-year-old woman fants and falls to the tracks of a railway station. a police officer springs on the tracks, picks the woman up and takes her to the platform. thank goodness for that rescue. traders are back to wall street after yesterday's holiday. earnings on deck today, dupont, johnson & johnson, verizon, ibm

helicopter gunner in afghanistan. while there, he made some revealing comments and he acknowledged that he has killed taliban fighters. >> take a life to save a life. that's what we sort of revolve around, i suppose. you know, it's people trying to stop war and we'll play the game, i suppose. >> harry also opened up about the infamous vegas photos of him naked and partying. he described his treatment by the media as unacceptable. >> i don't really want to get into details about what i think other people think. i really let myself down and other people down. at the end of the day, you know, there should be a certain amount of privacy that one should expect >> and the prince said he's thrilled about being an uncle but he complains that couldn't be kept a secret longer. >> i'm thrilled for both of them.

good morning and take a look at this. the happy you're not here. this was a reporter from our nbc affiliate in minneapolis. that is a frozen t-shirt. he wet it at the beginning of the broadcast. at the end of it, that's what you got. it is brutally cold in the northern plains. 10 below right now, windchills almost 30 belows. today it will be about 78 degrees in l.a. and rain moves back into the pacific northwest tomorrow. >> much better to be in l.a. than where the guy with the t-shirt was. >> yes. it would thaow quick in california.

captured some terrific moments. we start with beyonce's performance which seemed to catch the eye of senator chuck schumer. he was right behind the dazzling diva stealing a bit of that spotlight. president bill clinton didn't want to miss his chance of seeing kelly clarkson up close and personal. the former commander in chief was caught sneaking a peek. and leave it to families to embarrass. obama brother-in-law had his own 15 minutes of fame hamming it up over the president's shoulder. eric cantor was caught making a sour faces during richard blanco's reading of a poem. doesn't look like a fan there. and malia caught in hopping for a quick photo bomb as sasha tried to snap a moment of the parents. both daughters were in good spirits, hopping and bouncing as guests took the stage. malia showed off her moves. it's so nice to see the girls grow up. from 2004 to now -- >> you've seen the change from, you know, president obama from four years ago and how he's
